The Japanese Association of Speech-Language-Hearing Therapists (JAS) has been a cornerstone for professionals working with individuals facing communication disorders and swallowing difficulties in Japan. Established as a national professional and scientific organization, JAS currently boasts 21,081 licensed members as of March 2023. These dedicated members play an essential role in supporting millions of people across Japan, helping them overcome various speech, language, and swallowing challenges that significantly impact their daily lives. The organization serves as a vital resource for professionals, offering training, research, and advocacy for those in need.

To better support its growing membership and enhance their experience, significant updates were made to JAS’s website. The integration of new features aimed to improve access to essential resources and facilitate communication among members. The addition of prefectural association features allowed for more localized support, fostering collaboration and networking opportunities within regions. In addition, video distribution capabilities were introduced, enabling members to access educational content, professional seminars, and workshops more easily. These improvements help streamline the exchange of knowledge and enhance the visibility of JAS’s activities, making it easier for members to stay informed, connect, and contribute to the advancement of the field.

Problem Statement

Currently, the sessions and seminars organized by the Japanese Association of Speech-Language-Hearing Therapists (JAS) are held exclusively on-site, which poses a significant challenge for many members. Due to geographical constraints, work commitments, or personal limitations, there are numerous instances where members are unable to attend these valuable events in person. This lack of accessibility to seminars creates a barrier for members who wish to stay updated on the latest developments, research, and training opportunities in the field of speech-language therapy. To address this issue, there is a growing need for a system that allows participants to view seminar videos at their convenience. By offering on-demand access to recorded sessions, members would be able to catch up on the seminars they missed, participate in learning opportunities from the comfort of their homes, and engage with the content at their own pace. Such a system would enhance accessibility, improve member satisfaction, and ensure that all professionals, regardless of location, can continue to advance their knowledge and skills in this crucial field.

Results & Outcomes

The introduction of on-demand video streaming services has significantly enhanced accessibility for users, allowing them to watch session and seminar videos at a time that is most convenient for them. This has addressed the issue of participants being unable to attend on-site events due to scheduling conflicts, offering them the flexibility to access valuable content without limitations. By incorporating Vimeo’s API, the system has also ensured that users stay engaged with the content, requiring them to answer questions at the end of each video before proceeding, further increasing the effectiveness of the learning experience.

Furthermore, the integration with existing systems has expanded the functionality of the platform, creating a seamless experience for users. Registered participants can easily access the new video streaming service without needing to create new accounts, saving time and effort. The implementation of a modern payment system, which allows for credit card transactions instead of cash-only payments, has improved operational efficiency. This upgrade has not only simplified the payment process but also contributed to enhanced customer satisfaction and an increase in sales, benefiting both the users and the association’s overall revenue.
